This is the Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking Statement of KDM Timber Limited and its subsidiaries (“KDM” or “Group) prepared pursuant to s.54(1) of the UK Modern Slavery Act 2015 (the "Act").
The statement will be reviewed annually.
KDM confirms that it does not support or deal with any business that it knows or suspects to be involved in slavery or human trafficking and that we will endeavour to ensure that our own business operations are and continue to remain free of slavery and human trafficking.
KDM International Ltd imports timber and timber products for sale within the UK.
Svenskhomes Developments Ltd supplies high specification Swedish timber framed buildings.
The group employs 30 people in the UK and has a small number of consultants based overseas.
For the year ended 31 December 2023 group turnover was £49.1 million.
The majority of our timber and manufactured timber products are sourced from within the EU from suppliers who are subject to EU Timber Regulation (EUTR), but a small amount of timber is also imported from countries outside the EU.
KDM complies with the United Kingdom Timber Regulations.
We have a separate modern slavery policy which is set out below:
"Modern Day Slavery can be defined as situations of exploitation that a person cannot refuse or leave because of threats, violence, coercion, abuse of power or deception.
KDM is committed to driving out acts of modern day slavery and human trafficking within its business including sub-contractors and consultants and from within its supply chains.
KDM acknowledges its responsibility under the Modern Slavery Act 2015 and will endeavour to ensure transparency within the Group and within suppliers of goods and services to the Group.
Imported goods from sources from outside the UK and EU are potentially more at risk from slavery/human trafficking issues. KDM therefore focuses on taking measures to ensure that slavery and human trafficking are not taking place within these supply sources.
KDM will not support or deal with any business that it knows or suspects to be involved in slavery or human trafficking.”
Wherever possible KDM sources timber through Chain of custody (COC) certification schemes such as FSC and PEFC which have strict requirements in respect of the protections against forced labour within any accredited organisations.
KDM is a member of Timber Development UK (TDUK) and is audited annually to comply with the TDUK Responsible Purchasing Policy (RPP). The RPP is designed to meet all our obligations set out in the United Kingdom Timber Regulations, including legislation against forced or compulsory labour.
The impact of the sanctions on Russia and Belarus has from mid 2022 reduced very significantly the amount of timber sourced from outside the EU.
We consider suppliers based within the EU to be low risk, but that there is a higher level of risk associated with suppliers based outside the EU. This risk is addressed by the due diligence carried out to comply with the UK Timber Regulations.
We are committed to raising our people’s awareness of Modern Slavery by ensuring everybody has a copy of this statement, distributing guides as to explain what Modern Slavery is, and emphasising to all our people the importance of the issue..
This statement was approved by the board of directors and signed on their behalf by Andrew Walshe, Chairman on 11 March 2024.
